Riviera Maya Villages

 
Within the area of the Riviera Maya stand the towns of Puerto Morelos, a small fishing village a half hour south of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, a place that deserves a separate detailed description, Puerto Aventuras, where there are high-level residential areas. Akumal and Chemuyil are areas where live many employees working at the hotels along the coast. Also within this area there is one of the most important ecological reserves in Mexico, Sian-Ka'an, splendid habitat for its rich flora and fauna. Archaeological Sites of the Riviera Maya

Aktun Chen, Riviera Maya.

 
A little over 25 minutes from Playa del Carmen south direction and about fifteen minutes before reaching Tulum is Aktun Chen which in Mayan means "cenote cave." It is a park of over 1,000 acres of virgin forest whose real main attraction is just one of 6,500 ft2 cave formations of stalactites and stalagmites and cenotes on a stunning transparent green water 40 meters deep.
 

Xel-ha, Riviera Maya.

Tulum, Riviera Maya.

On the higher side of a cliff are the ruins of what was the only Mayan city of Tulum built along the coast. This archaeological site is within half an hour by road from Tulum occupying an area of 29 square miles. In the midst of a dense jungle is Nooch Muul pyramid, the tallest of all the Yucatan Peninsula, measuring 138 feet from the base to its peak, from which you get a spectacular view of the area.
 

Sian Ka'an Biosphere

In the opposite direction at the exit of Tulum and Coba, going firstly towards the beach of Boca Paila and then heading south along the coast a few miles of the beach the entrance to Sian Ka'an Biological Reserve which covers an area of over 1,235,000 acres of rainforest, lakes, lagoons, cenotes, mangroves and coral preserved all its original natural state. It is also a zone of protection for native animals such as jaguars, pumas, deer, crocodiles, spider monkeys and more than three hundred species of birds. The population living in this area of just over 1,000 people engaged in fishing. Continuing south, leaving behind the Biological Reserve, visitors can tour the coast commendably on a road that runs parallel to the sea being surrounded along the right side by dense jungle vegetation to Punta Allen, about 38 miles south of Boca Paila, after crossing wild beaches of extraordinary beauty.
 

Akumal, Riviera Maya.

Its beautiful bay was one of the first destinations of the Riviera Maya to be developed. Protected by coral was one of the places chosen by visitors for diving. Here come the giant tortoises in summer to lay their eggs on the beach. It is a place of wonderful sunrises with extensive beaches and small creeks like Yalkú or Crescent.
